Calcite

Calcite

A stunning, and as far as we are aware, unique example of calcite from the amethyst-bearing vugs of the trap basalts of northern Uruguay. The calcite crystal is intricate, with both a layered growth pattern visible on the prism (“top” in the picture) face, and astonishing rhombohedral growth chevrons on the front “face”, which is actually the termination of this very flattened crystal form. It is ornamented by sub-spherical aggregates of somewhat amethystine quartz which themselves may nucleate on an early growth of botrypidal carbonate which can be seen around the semi-circular scallops at the base of the major crystal.
