Andradite is a calcium‑rich form of garnet, which in this case formed in contact‑metamorphosed impure limestons adjacent to a syenite/trachyte intrusion. This occurrence was discovered in 2008/09, and is mined in somewhat perilous “artisanal” shafts in a tidal mangrove swamp.
In this example, lustrous apple‑green crystals of garnet to 1.5 cm in size occur as somewhati ntergrown “chains” on a contrasting buff‑coloured metamorphosed limestone matrix. The garnets are beautifully crystallized, and individually well‑defined.
